Your NEC matters here. HMs with 8402 (Submarine) or 8406 (Independent Duty Corpsman) have broader scope-of-practice experience and should highlight that explicitly. IDCs in particular carry a scope of practice that opens direct pathways to PA programs, clinical coordinator roles, and federal health positions.

Your military training is real, but civilian hiring processes often require civilian credentials. Prioritize these before you separate:
- NREMT — National Registry EMT. If you don't have it, get it before you separate. Most states accept it for EMT or AEMT licensure.
- BLS / ACLS / PALS — Get the American Heart Association versions. Military cards aren't always accepted by civilian employers.
- CMA (AAMA) or RMA — Certified Medical Assistant credentials if you're targeting clinic or physician office roles.
- HIPAA training certificate — Required by most civilian healthcare employers. Easy to obtain online.

- E-1 through E-4 (HN, HA, HM3, HM2): Focus on clinical volume, patient load, and any training or team responsibilities. You likely supervised or trained someone — put it on the resume.
- E-5 and E-6 (HM1, HM2 with leadership billet): Lead with leadership scope. How many people? What budget? What outcomes? Civilian employers at this level want to see supervisory experience framed clearly.
- E-7 and above (HMC, HMCS, HMCM): Your resume should look like a clinical manager's resume — not a technician's. Scope of command, budget oversight, policy development, and personnel management belong in your summary and top bullets.
If you held a clearance, put it on your resume. Defense health contractors — Leidos, Booz Allen, GDIT — actively recruit cleared medical personnel. A clearance combined with clinical skills is a real differentiator.
